Brecht was born on the 10th of February 1898 and died on the 14th of August 1956. He had his first work published in 1922, which was 'Drums In The Night', the second play he wrote. The first was 'BAAL', which he wrote when he was a student at Munich University; this was prior to his work in epic theatre. In 1918 Brecht worked as a medical orderly in World War 1 and saw many tragic, horrible things. Theses things are what influenced him to put together plays in the form of epic theartre. Brecht wrote many plays based on what he saw during this time and used war as a theme many times. Brecht's goal was to challenge the audience and make them think for themselves, which many plays/films don't do these days. Most of the time now the play/film tells you what to think and feel about the what you are watching. Brecht didn't want to do this. he wanted to distance the audience and make sure they remembered they were watching a play so they didn't get emotionally attached and were able to form their own opinion on what was going on.
Brecht collaborated quite often with other playwrights such as Erwin Piscator, Kurt Weill and Elisabeth Hauptmann.
Brecht also wrote many poems and composed songs.
