Lighting
- The stage was often just lit by plain white light and nothing else.
- The lights may not match the mood of what is going on on the stage.
Directing
- the scenes were not always in order and may jump back and forth between times and places.
- There may be use of freeze frames
Acting
- Actors would break the fourth wall. the fourth wall being an imaginary wall between the stage and the audience. When someone breaks the fourth wall, it means they acknowledge the audiences existence, by talking to them, asking them questions etc
- There may be use of song and dance at random times during the performance
- The actor may play more than one role in the play, making the characters seem even more unrealistic
- They may use mime during their performance
- Sometimes there was use of naration
- They may speak in a monotone voice
Sets
- The sets were bland and only for use. As in there may only be a door for someone to walk through, but no walls or anything that would give it a realistic feel.
- There may be projections at the back to describe the scene and it may tell us where or when that particular scene is set.
Costumes
- The costumes may be very casual.
- The costume that an actor is wearing may not suit the character they are portraying.
Props
- The props were very obvious, for example a sign saying 'policeman' around the policeman neck
- There were usually no extra props that were just for decoration, they all had a purpose or were used to represent something
Sound
- There may be music that is rather unsuited to the scene that is taking place. As in, they may play an up-beat tune as a character is getting chased around onstage.
- The music was used to comment or conflict what was going on on stage
